Shakira began performing at school, showing interest in Latin American, Arabic and rock-and-roll music, as well as abilities in belly dancing.

The eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010) received critical acclaim, but were not promoted due to tensions with Epic Records. Her official song for the World Cup 2010 Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) was the best-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 2 billion views, the video for it is one of the most watched videos on YouTube, and the most viewed video for the song Chantaje has over 2.2 billion views. As of November 2018, 24 million users have subscribed to the YouTube channel Shakira. Since 2013, Shakira has been a judge on the American version of Voice in the fourth and sixth seasons. The release of her tenth album Shakira (2014) was preceded by the main single Can’t Remember to Forget You.
